The work before the work. Before any medicine there is preparation: intention, honest screening, nervous system groundwork, and knowing what you are walking toward and why. Written by a woman Veteran for the ones the system never reached, in plain field manual language.

What is inside

  • What tends to surface before, during, and after a ceremony, and how to prepare your mind, body, and relationships first.
  • How to vet a facilitator: the red flags, the questions to ask, and when to walk away.
  • What the Department of Veterans Affairs and the research community are doing right now, in plain language.
  • A track for women Veterans, a track for those carrying spiritual questions, and hard talk about what happens if this is not the right move for you right now.
  • Crisis resources, screening guidance, and a resources section that points to community and integration support.

107 pages. Start here, then continue with After the Armor™, the integration framework for what comes after, and keep The Field Journal™ beside both.

What Readers Are Saying

“Most books about psychedelic medicine are written by researchers in lab coats or influencers who have never smelled cordite. Before the Medicine is written from the bleeding edge of survival. Caroline Swan speaks with the blunt authority of an OIF combat veteran who spent decades in the VA waiting-room grinder, lost her son to foster care while incapacitated in a military hospital, and had to claw her way back from an autonomic nervous system wired only for war. She doesn’t sell plant medicine as an easy out or a spiritual vacation; she treats a ceremony like an operational breach that demands preparation, reconnaissance, and brutal personal honesty. If you are a veteran tired of running the same 0200 loop, or a spouse trying to understand the silent stranger sitting across your dinner table, do not walk into a ceremony without reading this field manual first. It might just save your life.”

— Senior Nonfiction & Veteran Affairs Review

“The only book that told me the ugly truth before I sat with the medicine.”

“Every podcast makes psilocybin sound like weeping peacefully in the woods. Swan tells you what actually happens when a combat-trained nervous system hits the medicine and thinks it’s being ambushed. The facilitator vetting questions in Section 3 kept me from making a massive mistake.”

— Marcus R., OEF Combat Veteran

“It finally put words to what my family has been living through.”

“The section where she describes standing outside the doorway, loving her grandchildren with everything in her but physically unable to walk into the room without bracing for impact, made me break down. For fifteen years, that was my husband. This isn’t just a book for veterans; it’s a field guide for the families waiting on the other side of that door.”

— Sarah T., Army Spouse

“A required operational brief for alternative trauma healing.”

“Swan strips away the wellness industry jargon and delivers a disciplined, tactical framework rooted in real biology, Hebbian neuroplasticity, and genuine harm reduction. Unfiltered, fiercely protective, and deeply necessary.”

— David K., Psychedelic Integration Coach & Former Navy Corpsman

About the author

Caroline Swan is a Disabled Army Combat Veteran, a single Mother, and a Memaw. She came home 100 percent combat service connected, carrying combat trauma, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Military Sexual Trauma, and moral injury, and spent close to 20 years inside a system that was quicker to medicate her than to listen. She wrote the guide she went looking for and could not find. You do not have to walk into that room without a plan.
